EDITORIAL SERVICES

GENERAL INFORMATION

Each document receives several detailed readings, depending upon the depth of editing required. Basic Copyediting, for example, takes many more passes through the document than Proofreading.

The finished product is delivered to the author electronically or as hard copy. If requested, an additional copy can be sent, showing colour-coded highlighted changes made. A detailed worksheet is included, outlining specific problems addressed, suggestions, and a list of sources and resources used.

PROOFREADING*

....is generally performed on a document which has already received peer review and is considered by the author to be ready for publication. Author's logic is not questioned. Rule-based checks include:

BASIC COPYEDITING*

....is usually performed on a document that has received peer review for content, but needs to be subjected to rule-based checks, to produce a clear, grammatically correct and accurate document which is a pleasure to read and a credit to the author. Gaps in logic may be questioned. Checks include:

SUBSTANTIVE COPYEDITING*

.... includes Basic Copyediting, but also involves analysis at all levels, not simply the application of rule-based checks.

The document is first read and checked for organizational structure, logical progression, clarity of matter, inconsistencies, and inaccuracies, e.g. between text and charts. Suggestions are made to the author for the reworking and improvement of difficult-to-understand passages. Whatever is necessary can be performed to improve the work, but is not implemented without consent. The author's 'voice' is retained. There are likely to be several communications between the editor and author to identify and resolve potential problems.

WEB PAGE PROOFREADING/EDITING*

Web Page text is copied into an MS Word document on which colour-coded corrections and suggestions are made and returned electronically to the author, for submission to the web builder. Page links are checked and external links can be followed through.

TRANSPOSING TYPED DOCUMENTS TO COMPUTER FILES*

If you have a clean typewritten document double or single spaced, it can be transposed onto a computer disk using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. Thereafter regular services can be used.
