Have you ever experienced a life-threatening situation?
Being plucked from the ocean by helicopter in a cyclone (hurricane), in 160 kph winds and 16-metre seas,
certainly changed my outlook on life.
En route from Australia to Canada in March 1997, our sailboat, Orca was
caught in a freak cyclone outside the Great Barrier Reef. My husband and I battled for 53 hours in
untenable conditions to try to save the boat from sinking. We lost, but thanks to the selfless dedication
of an Australian helicopter rescue crew, and the USAF pilot and crew of a C130 Hercules aircraft who found us by homing
in on our EPIRB signal, we survived.
Our home for 7 years had sunk to the bottom of the Coral Sea, but we gained new insight into life priorities.
Shrugging off the pursuit of power and wealth, we embraced a simple, low-key lifestyle and a certain serenity.
Now home is on our small mixed-livestock organic farm, tucked under the Beaufort Mountains on beautiful Vancouver
Island, British Columbia, Canada. My husband (erstwhile a professional power-plant engineer) does the majority of
the farm work, whilst I help out between editing and writing assignments.
These are views from my office window!

HEROES WHO LAID THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE, TO RESCUE US IN CYCLONE JUSTIN
|
Paramedic Angus McDonell (down the wire man), Senior Pilot Peter Hope and
Aircrew Officer/Winchman Ian Callaghan received numerous commendations for
bravery including the Bronze Cross, and the American Eurocopter Golden Hour
Award for the most outstanding helicopter rescue of its kind worldwide in 1997.
Lt. Commander Robert (Jack) Spratt, Pilot; John Newman, Co-pilot; and the crewmen
who flew the Hercules into the cyclone to find Orca were decorated by the US Navy for outstanding aeronautical skill.
